Carving a Brook Trout Pendant

Carving a Brook Trout Pendant

“There’s a lot of thought and planning that
goes into making a carving.” “In order to be creative, I’ve got to get
out in the country and get some inspiration.” I thought it would be a lot of fun to carve
a brook trout pendant, so me and Pearl are heading to the upper meadow to see if I can
catch a few.” I’ve been fishing this stream all my life. And a willow stick fishing pole works just
as good as it did back when I was a kid.” “Fishing the upper meadow brings back a lot
of good memories.” “Brook Trout are small, but the creek is chock-full of them.” “I think they’re one of the most beautiful
trout that the Lord has made.” “In our opinion, they’re the best tasting
trout there is!” “I’m going to make this little pendant from
a piece of Pacific Yew wood” “I really like the way yew wood carves. It holds the detail well, and is a nice hard
wood.”

  2. I don’t do wood carving though I do have some chisels and rotary tools. Your thumbnail in my recommendations made me watch this video and I'm really glad it did.

You are without doubt a very talented man, but it’s much more than that. You have a contentment that’s very rare, coupled with a great understanding of your environment. You are appreciative of what you’ve been given and want to share that with the world.

Thank you for brightening my day.

  3. You may or may not know Mike, but Yew is my favourite wood to turn. It finishes so well and is lovely to cut!

Once more you showed us all how small can be beautiful, your patience is boundless, can`t wait for your next video Mike, what will it be I wonder. Highest regards to you and family from John in England.

  12. Check out "Copperhead Snake Surprise! Don't Get Too Close!" on YouTube. The video shows the copperhead walking stick you carved in a montage of live copperhead photos. Your sticks apparently look more "alive" than the real thing!!

  13. Really nice video, loving how you and Pearl went fishing in the beginning. I got a similar scrolling saw but i cant get it to cut straight at all, any tips on that matter? Best regards Jon

  14. Excellent work Mike. The shape, color, and body carving looks just like a brook trout you caught from the stream. I love your work Mike and give pearl a pat on the back for me. God Bless you and your family. Mike Brady

  15. I love watching your videos, I was wondering why do you carve details like the rays on the fins and tail and then go over them with the wood burner and then paint?

  21. I caught brookies my entire life fly fishing here in Pennsylvania. There’s a brook trout fingerling hatchery farm less than 2 miles from my place. Your tiny pendant is so accurate and realistic it’s just surreal. I’m also new to woodworking and your carving and painting is the best I’ve ever seen. You are amazingly talented and inspiring sir. Thank you for sharing this.

  22. I wanted trout in a restaurant as a kid and dad said are you sure? They have lots of bones. I said I didn't care. So I had me a trout for dinner once. Your key chain picture of your trout was so realistic! I was once introduced to breaded rattlesnake but wasn't told what it was until after I ate it. Tasted like chicken. Cooked buffalo once. Didn't like it much. Had venison stew a couple days and when my Montana was alive my Chihuahua who recently passed was a puppy she tried it and liked it. When I see you carve mice the other day I rescued a mouse who wondered into my garage. Good thing I opened it up when I did. Set him free.

I'm from northeast Ohio so when I see states like yours I'm awed by the beauty. We have nothing like that here unless you're into dairy cows and corn fields in the country. The metropark near me is chintzy woods compared to your forests.

You sure have the life where you are!

  23. So relaxing to look at somebody who really has good skills, patient, and is so relaxed. It calms down the blood pressure 🏅🏅🏅

  24. Marling Baits is another AMAZING artist on youtube. He makes some unbelievable hand-carved baits of all kinds.

  27. you make that look so easy, but i know there is years and years of practice in those hands, that little brook trout is beyond beautiful.
