Dallas Herring Achievement Award

Dallas Herring Achievement Award

As a student or employee at Durham Tech, you
may have noticed that our logo includes what we call pathways. These pathways can be seen
as a representation of the journeys our students have taken to arrive at our doors, and from
there on to working their ways through our academic and career programs. Your own journey
may look like a straight line, a curve, or a loop – or even multiple curves and loops. It is these journeys that we celebrate here
today, beautifully articulated by the late Dr. Dallas Herring, who inspired the competition
that brings us together this evening. “You and I Iive in an age of change and challenges.” Widely acknowledged as the “father” of
the North Carolina Community College System, one of his most famous quotes provides the
topic for the 2016 Dallas Herring Achievement Awards essay. His visionary philosophy of
creating an education system in our state, open to all, charged with “taking people
where they are and carrying them as far as they can go,” inspired more than two dozen
Durham Tech students to submit a letter nominating themselves for this year’s award. The top award winner will go on to represent
Durham Tech at the state competition for the 2016 Dallas Herring Achievement Award. Mohammed Afsahi fled IRan after being imprisoned
and tortured for voicing opposition to the government. “And I’m very grateful and thankful for the
United States and the government – everything. I’m very happy now. Fifi Mayele is Congolese. She was an attorney
before coming to the U.S. and plans to continue her education at NCCU. You had only been here 5 days when you came
for your ESL class? Yes, I came here, it was a Friday, and next week, Tuesday, I was in
class. So it was amazing, even the teacher was “What, how many have you been here?” I
said five days. Five days? Lisa Fowler volunteered in Jamaica’s schools
for the deaf. Her experiences there and at Durham Tech have helped shape her future. I will be the first deaf student ever to earn
Durham Technical Community College an Associate’s of Art Degree. Durham Tech family, let’s join together in
acknowledging our top three student submissions for the 2016 Dallas Herring Achievement Award.
