Fish Consumption and Suicide

Fish Consumption and Suicide

[Music] depression is a serious and common mental disorder responsible for the majority of suicides but as I already covered intakes of fruits vegetables and naturally occurring antioxidants have been found to be protectively associated with depression so they concluded it may be possible to prevent depression or to lessen its negative effects through dietary intervention but not so fast that was a cross-sectional study meaning a snapshot in time so you don’t know whether the poor dietary pattern precedes the development of depression or if depression causes poor dietary intake depression and even treatments for depression can affect appetite and dietary intake maybe people who feel crappier just eat crap your instead of the other way around what you need is a prospective study a study performed over time where you start out with people who are not depressed and follow them for six years and those with higher carotenoid levels in their blood streams which is considered a good indicator fruit and vegetable intake would associate with a 20% lower risk of becoming depressed within that time so they conclude that having low blood levels of those healthy phytonutrients may predict the development of new depressive symptoms but what about suicide worldwide a million people kill themselves every year in this comparison of European countries Greece had the lowest rates of suicide maybe it’s the balmy weather but maybe it has something to do with their diet 10,000 people followed for years and those following a more Mediterranean diet pattern were less likely to be diagnosed with depression what was it about the diet that was protective it wasn’t the red wine or the fish it was the fruit and nuts and effectively hired plant animal fat ratio and beans that appeared protective conversely significant adverse trends were observed for dairy and meat consumption a similar protective dietary pattern was found in Japan a high intake of vegetables fruit mushrooms and soy products was associated with a decreased prevalence of depressive symptoms it was not characterized by a high intake of seafood a hundred thousand Japanese men and women were Falls for up to 10 years and they didn’t find evidence of a protective role of higher fish consumption or those long-chain omega-3s EPA & DHA against suicide in fact they found a significantly increased risk of suicide among male non-drinkers with high seafood to make a three intake this may have just been due to chance but a similar result was found in the Mediterranean high baseline fish consumption together with an increasing consumption were associated with an increased risk of mental disorders and one possible explanation could be the mercury content of fish an accumulation of mercury compounds could increase the risk of depression we know that mercury and fish can cause neurological damage such as negative effects and Alzheimer’s disease memory loss autism as well as depression so the increased risk of suicide among persons with a high fish intake might be attributable to the harmful effects of mercury in fish the big Harvard cohorts found similar results hundreds of thousands fought for up to 20 years no evidence taking fish oil or eating fish lowered risk of suicide with a trend towards even higher suicide mortality what about for the treatment of depression neither EPA or DHA appeared more effective than just sugar pills and the same can be said when one puts all the trials done to date together we used to think a mega three supplementation was useful but several recent studies have tipped the balance the other way it seems that nearly all the treatment efficacy observed and the published literature may be attributable to publication bias meaning the trials that showed no benefit tended not to get published at all and so all one saw was a bunch of positive studies but only because a bunch of the negative ones were buried [Music] you

  1. Important to keep hydrated – studies also show depression increased with low intake of water – need 2-3 litre's per day

  2. @NutritionFacts.org Thank you doctor Greger 👍 Any studies about on plant vs fish sources regarding EFA'S?
Many thanks for all that you do sir

  3. Fish Oil is a juiced/blended fish. How does that sound ?
Sounds like it's something the human body has evolved on ?
Get your oils from the plants and nuts.

  4. WARNING: McDonald's Filet-O-fish is known to the state of California to cause suicidal tendencies, bad breath, elevated cholesterol and mercury poisoning. Bon Apetit.

  5. check vitamin D levels…every publication has a bias…this is why you read the end of the study before the beginning

  6. Cherry picking bad studies doc. Title is bad also. It should be mercury consumption and suicide. Fish oil has been proven in many studies to improve depression. Yes there are fish that do not have mercury. (Sardines, oysters, salmon, cod) I feel bad for you vegans, I believe you are abusing your body and the sad thing may be that you don't even know it.

  7. As always dr you are right on the target.iwouldnt know about rates, but ican say one thing. More fruit ang veggies eaten more happiness comes from inside.yet to discover by observation if this happens because of nutrients or because you do something right for yourself and feels good.
As for Mediterranean diet, modern greeks kept those greasy plates and got rid of the healthy ones. Except family meetings, there the old generation does indeed follow by tradition food that take you to health itself.
Tradition state only old age meat and one every 2 weeks.what is your opinion about this "all in moderation" proverb?

  8. If doing The Starch Solution eating plan, eat your beans at lunch-time instead of tea-time to avoid gas.

  9. how much mercury is actually in fish? is it really something to worry about? and what amount is a problem for the human body to deal with?

  10. Dr Udo Erasmus proved that a 2:1 ratio of Omega 3&6 was required to assimilate any Omega 3.  To get the anti-inflammatory omega 3, look for cold pressed, CamelinaGold or Hemp oil.  These are the only plant based oils that have a 2:1 ratio.  You cannot get omega 3's in flax  because flax has a 3:1 ratio.  Research CamelinaGold d o t com.

  11. The suicide rate in Greece is much higher nowadays, and for once it has nothing to do with diet 🙁

  12. Could be the Mercury but it should be noted that EPA /DHA causes a depletion in vitamin E levels resulting in depression/decrease in well being. Same symptoms are observed when flaxseed oil is taken without vitamin E.

  13. Get rid of amalgam fillings that are poisonous mercury that eventually breaks down and is breathed in with every breath . All done to harm not help you and get you on DR table or on prescription medication from cradle to grave .Follow the money$$$$$$

  14. But what about a little fish, once or twice a week? Or a little fishoil? Too much of anything is bad.

  15. I always apply the physiology rule to rate food:  if it is good for you, you should be able to eat it raw.  We definitely can't eat fish as is.  we have to descale fish, thoroughly clean it, and cook it as it contains parasites and worms besides mercury.  So it can't be all that good, may be a secondary food when your optimum food is scarce.  As for fish oil, never believed that BS it's just slick marketing promoting yet another snake oil

  16. Scare mongering at it's best. This is why I no longer follow Gregors videos anymore.

He has an agenda and it has to do with the vegan movement, his videos are biased and he has made this very clear.

Fish has helped me with depression. When I consume no fish I get very moody after about a weak since I'm not getting enough of all of the essential amino acids.

  17. Excellent presentation again Dr. Gregar! Have any studies have looked at supplementation with EPA and DHA pills as opposed to eating fish (theoretically decreasing mercury intake) to see if the same association with increased suicide is found?

  18. This guy's voice really annoys me.it is really creepy and he over accentuates each syllable for affect..I also hate the way he misappropriates data to suit his bullshit agenda.its as fake as his irritating voice.

  19. This is a marginal study, and there is a vast amount of scholarly investigations and studies that contradict the findings within this one study, so not entirely conclusive. Omega 3 and fish will enhance cognitive functions and will better your mood; I eat white and oily fish daily and I feel great.

Conversely, when I was on a vegan diet I was always in a bad mood, felt weak, felt lethargic, had thin hair, weakened teeth and a nasty case of brain fog – lower cognitive functioning.

Good health and fortune to you all.

  20. If one is on a vegan diet then they are deficient in at least 15 vital nutrients and minerals required for our survival and prosperity. The list includes:

    Vitamin A

    Vitamin B6

    Vitamin B12 (pyridoxial, pyridoxamin)

    Vitamin D

    Vitamin F

    Vitamin K2

Amino Acids: creatine, taurine, carnitine, carnosine

    Cholesterol, saturated animal fat

    Heme-Iron, CLa, CoQ10

Animal bacteria, enzymes (help digestion and absorption of minerals, hormones.

You are probably asking yourself, ‘but fruit and vegetables have some of the Vitamins you mentioned’?! Yes they do, however, attached to these Vitamins is Antinurtients – which are a plant defence mechanism that inhibits the creature eating the plant, or plants seeds or produce, from absorbing the Vitamins and mineral contained within the plant properly; this is apparent within over 2000 plant species that humans partake in. Additionally, some plants and some fruits have Cyanogenic Glycosides (Cyanide) and antioxidants (which in large quantities, acquired from a vegan diet, will increase your risk factor of failure of specific organs – specifically the kidney and liver.

Search on YouTube ‘Veganism: the epitome of malnourishment’ – it will open your eyes.

Please, I implore you, research this diet before you commit to it.

Good health and fortune to you.

  21. Finding and eating fish low in mercury is the key. Fish oil alone can be intook as a supplement as well. Vegan is great but you will trade a decrease in toxins for deficiencies that can lead to aggression and suicide. Mercury having the same effect. So it's about research and careful choices at market. I only eat fish like herring, cod, specially sourced salmon now and greens etc. I take a liquid multivitamin and additional fish oils for plenty of omega 3s etc. I'm 44 and work 16 hour days in the addiction field, I never need coffee or energy drinks and sleep very little…gotta be doing something right. I also have only one kidney! My brain is very sharp and clear as well. When I ate red meat and pork I was very tired all the time. I also don't eat a lot of bread, just a tuna sandwich for lunch each day on whole grain. Oh and tomatoes, particularly Romas I grow myself!
