GFX stories with Ichigo Sugawara (菅原一剛) -Sakhalin- / FUJIFILM

Sakhalin Okhotskoe faces the Sea of Okhotsk 12 hours by train at night from Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk
Headed north to the Sakhalin Railway Terminal Station Nogliki I am here at Nogliki The city is a gateway to northern part of Sakhalin The people of Nivkh live here The city is among the many cities where indigenous people dwell I visited here last summer
to see their lives I came back here today to take their portraiture I was drawn into Sakhalin
because I wanted to see the places where Kenji Miyazawa came up with his idea for his book
“The Night of the Milky Way Train” I also wanted to meet the people of Nivkh Their face look very Japanese. I wanted to meet them. And lastly I wanted to visit Tatar Strait I’ve always wanted to come to norhtern part of Sakhlin Because I feel that all things originated in the north. I think there is something that I can get out of
just by visiting the place. Tuimi River in Nogliki Headed toward Okha, northernmost city
230km further up from Nogliki 5-hour drive up north Meeting place of Nivkh This is my third visit to Sakhalin
and I am really happy I came back. I could have never imagined I would meet people that look just like us here You look just like my mother Look at the camera Another one Today was a good session I know that I got some good pictures I brought GFX with me
I wanted to take portraiture with a medium format camera Just that fact alone, I think these portraits
are better than the previous visits I want to see the picture in a proper setting
I am already excited about it I am confident of the result There is an exhibition going on today The building looks so beautiful The Russian and Nivkh are mixed together
which results in a very modern appearance. The houses on the strip are also very beautiful When you look at the abandoned oil mine
from 100 years ago The wood frames are so refined and delicate It’s so beautiful I think the locomotive looked just like that
when Kenji Miyazawa visited here I see “The Night of the Milky Way Train”
in it Everything is modern and intellectual
and also hearty I really like this place The tradition of Nivkh, Dog sledding I feel I was able to take pictures of the people in their ordinary life I want to take photos in everyday life situation and I want to find a connection to my life I want to learn truth How it began
Where it came from I want to learn how it relates to me I take photographs for that reason alone I was able to visit cape called Kaigan
It is a miracle This is the most northern part of Sakhalin And we made it here in winter! The locals had told me that we cannot
come here in winter I almost gave up my hope of coming here But when we took our chance, It just so happened that the snow was just removed from the road And now we are here All things in sight are frozen
But this is actually ocean These ice breaks into pieces
and make their way to Japan This is the origin of the drift ice
I never thought I could see it I’ve always talked about this origin I kept on saying it I think it was inevitable that
now I am finally here at the origin Photography turn things into inevitable I had just experienced that I would never be here
if it were not for phography I would have never be able to see this view I am really glad that I see this The drift ice will never be the same for me This has become part of my life I am anxious to know what I would think
when I see drift ice next year Even the pictures of drift ice would never be
the same, now that I actually saw this in my own eye I know that my feeling is reflected in the picture I took This is one of the greatest that happened in this trip But it is cold It is really really cold But the joy outweighs cold
