How to clean a fish tank

Hi, it’s Ben here at Petstock. Today I’m
discovering how to clean a fish tank. Now, if you watched our ‘setting up a tank’
video you’ll know how important it is to have balanced water. So, when cleaning
your tank, you should lose as little of this good water as possible,
25% max. To take us through the details, because I’ve got no idea, I have friend and PETstock’s resident fish magician, Kyri here to help. Hi Kyri. Hi Ben. Yes, folks, it’s actually pretty easy to clean your tank without stressing you, or your fish, you just need a little preparation. You’ll need a large
bucket, a towel on the floor just in case, a gravel vacuum like this one and a
little more water conditioner. Firstly, you shouldn’t need to take your fish out of the tank, that can really stress them. Instead, get the large end of your vac
hose and fill it like this, jiggle it up and down a bit and you’ll get the
suction going. You can drift it over the top to suck up
the waste, or do what I do, and really get into that gravel, to give it a really
good clean. A lot of waste builds up in there, by the time you vacuumed all your gravel, you’ll have lost about 25% of your water, be sure that you don’t expose
your heater or filter, that can damage them. Gradually add back clean tap water,
at slower intervals for tropical tanks, so there is no major temperature change.
Use the same water treatment as you did when setting up the tank. Cleaning your
tank like this every three or four weeks should keep the water gravel, glass nice
and clean. What about snails and catfish Kyri? Good question Ben. You can also purchase special algae eating snails or small sucker catfish, like plecos, to help clean the glass. They’re very handy and they also look pretty awesome too. What about squeegees? Maybe not that big. We do have these magnet cleaners, a great idea for glass tanks. Thanks Kyri. Well, there you have it folks. I’m feeling
cleaner already. Until next time, see ya.
