Making an Acrylic Aquarium Complete Guide – DIY

Making an Acrylic Aquarium Complete Guide – DIY

One of the satisfying activity you do in aquarium
and fish keeping hobby is building an aquarium of your own. At first this seems like very tedious work
to many but I am saying from my experience it is truly easy and creative do it yourself
task. Also you can earn money selling build acrylic
aquariums because they are in good demand in the market. Now I have already told about making aquarium
using glasses you can check them in cards if you want to. In this video I will walk you through making
an acrylic aquarium, I got small acrylic sheets with low thickness so I am making small acrylic
aquarium and use it as a quarantine tank but the same methods apply to build larger acrylic
aquarium as well. So follow along this video and you may find
something new. To be clear building acrylic aquarium is bit
costlier than making glass aquarium but you can make many acrylic aquariums once you have
the desired materials with you. Also if you make aquarium in more spacious
place like the workshop or garage then it will help you make it much faster. All required tools and materials are provided
in the video description for you to purchase if you don’t have with you. Buying from the link could favor me as well
so get it at cheap price from there. Check the link in video description to find
it. Now without further due let’s get started. For making an acrylic aquarium you will need
an Acrylic Sheets of thickness 10mm and more
is usually recommend if you are making aquarium of 70 gallon or more always remember 15 mm
or more thicker acrylic sheet is required Then you need Acrylic glue like Weld on-4
or Weld on-3 now glue are costly but it can be used for making plenty of Acrylic aquariums
once you purchase a bottle. You can also buy Weld on- 16 which can come
in handy if your aquarium gets leak after build
Next you may want the clamp to hold the edges together about 4 to 5 of them is good
A Map gas torch for flame polishing If you are cutting the acrylic sheet yourself
but not purchasing custom cut sheet from the shop then you may need following tools too
An Acrylic cutting saw tooth with more sharp teeth or
Jigsaw or the Circular saw
Acrylic edge scrapper Sanding Paper 30 grit, 60 grit and 120 grit
Once you have all the required material, making the acrylic aquarium is very easy. Now first I will cover custom cutting acrylic
and also preparing its edges for gluing. Secondly I will show how to glue the edges
together to finish building the acrylic aquarium. So based on your requirement you can click
the timestamp in the video description to watch the desired segment. Now custom cutting the acrylic sheet yourself
is very difficult it is always recommended to cut the acrylic sheet from the shop and
they are of good quality finish. I had very tough time cutting them so I recommend
cutting them from shop if you don’t have right tools to cut them. You can use the cutting saw or jig saw or
circular saw to cut the acrylic sheet to desired dimensions
You must be careful about the side acrylic sheets for the aquarium and remember the formula
I told in the video of making the glass aquarium. The edges of cut out acrylic sheet then need
to be polished using router or buffing wheel which most of us don’t have
But you can use the acrylic scrapper to level the edges and make it smoother and devoid
of saw marks or you can use sanding paper to sand them down starting from lower grit
to higher grit that is 30 grit to 120 grit For this you can also use palm sander or manually
do the sanding Once you notice that edges to be glued are
flat leveled and devoid of saw marks you can start with the gluing the acrylic sheets together So preparing the edges is the crucial part
in making acrylic aquarium now gluing the sheets is much simpler
The Glue used that is Weldon -4 or 3 is liquid and watery and is fast setting glue which
sets and glues in 1 minute there is a table on the glue which states that. Now as compared to it weld on 16 allows you
to readjust the sheets like in case of a silicone gluing. Now if you are using Weldon -4 or Weldon -3
I will tell how to take the glue and pour in the hypo applicator
First open the top lid using some tool like cutting plier arms to open it with ease
Then open the closed tight lid inside by piercing the sharp screw driver or similar stuff and
popping it out. Now pour the liquid water glue into the hypo
applicator using a small narrow funnel and fill up to less than one half of the hypo
applicator Don’t pour extra liquid as you may find
difficulty when more liquid comes out of hypo applicator which can also spill on the acrylic
sheet and leave white patches, making it to look dirty. You can clean them as well using plastic cleaning
and polishing solution like Novus 1,2 and 3 which I will also discuss in detail in later
part of this video Now coming back to work area scene once you
pour the recommended amount close the lid of the glue tightly and store in some cool
place for further use later. To start gluing the surfaces first take the
bottom sheet and lay it flat on the table or surface you are working on. Then take the side sheet and put its edges
on the edge surface of bottom sheet like this. You can use clamp to hold the arrangement
in place. Now take the hypo applicator and squeeze some
air out of it and invert the applicator so that air can enter through the glue inside
With the invert hypo applicator place the needle close to the contacting edges of the
sheets which is to be glued and gently press the applicator to release the liquid glue
between the contacting surfaces When you see a uniform wetting through the
acrylic sheet edges you can proceed and run along the edge squeezing the liquid glue. Now after 1 to 3 minute the edges are glued
so before that you can arrange the edge and sheet if they are not aligned properly after
2 minute the surface are glued, however maximum strength is not reached after 24 to 48 hours. Now similarly you can glue the other sides
one by one like this… After gluing all the sides you can leave your
acrylic aquarium for 24 hours without disturbing it
After 24 to 48 hours you can do the leak test by filling water into it. Most probably it will not leak if the edges
are prepared and polished well. If it does then you can use weld on 16 and
apply it on the leaking pore you notice. Make sure to clean the acrylic aquarium well
and dry it also before applying weld on 16 and be careful with weld on 16 because unlike
weld on 3 or 4 it leave hard shapes on the acrylic aquarium and you cannot remove them
easily. Now again do the water leak test after 24
hours and if your acrylic aquarium is not leaking then it is ready to be used. You can also polish your acrylic aquarium
with Novus solution and remove scratches too to give it a professional finish
Novus comes in Novus 1, 2 and 3. Novus 1 for plastic clean and shine
Novus 2 for fine scratches And Novus 3 for Heavy scratches
Apply the required solution on the white patches or scratches and add more detail and professional
finish. You can also flame polish the edges using
map gas torch, propane gas is not generally recommended as it has low heating ability. The quality of the acrylic aquarium depends
on the edges prepared and glued and transparency of the acrylic sheet itself so make sure to
give extra stress on these aspects while making the acrylic aquarium. Acrylic sheet has unique property of molding
or bending when it is uniformly heated. If you heat acrylic with direct fire it will
catch fire and also gluing flame polished edges will produce cracks in the surface so
be cautious and never do these mistakes. Now that’s it Acrylic aquarium is finished
now you can also build bigger acrylic aquarium using this method and also acrylic is very
good for making pool or pond sides as well. Now Acrylic aquarium is better than glass
aquarium in some key features like it is less fragile than glass and also easily repaired
if scratches fall on it. Also acrylic sheet bonding is at molecular
level while when glasses are glued using silicone they are just surficial level. So acrylic aquariums gives neat and detail
finish without showing any glue marks in the aquarium when it’s completely build. But needless to say both acrylic and glass
aquarium has its own pros and con. Tell me which is your preferred aquarium is
it glass or acrylic leave your comments or suggestion in the comment section below. Like this video if it helped you and share

your videos are truly informative ..but presentation needs to be improvised

  3. Thanks Mr.Sinto …your post is really worth… though it seems easier(of course it must be easy for experts) but in fact need a bit of skill and patience…. . Awaiting for more such worthy videos… please.

  4. brother I wanted to make a glass aquarium of 6 foot length,2 foot breadth and 3 foot height is it safe I am making it with 12 mm glass

  5. You don’t make acrylic tanks like that !!!
that will fall apart the joins will open you haven’t even put bracing bars on it love the pretending to hit it with a hammer part also a very big no no if you want to waste money and flood your house copy this video oh and jigsaw acrylic sheets funny 😂

  6. Do u sell acrylic sheets? I am looking for a seamless front section tank. The height of tank is 90cms and length is 107 cms and depth is 28 cms.

  7. Amazing video! If I am using acrylic material to build a 5 sided water basin, the dimensions are 2.5ftx2.5ftx1/4in, I plan on filling it with 37 Gallons of water. Will this design withstand the water pressure of 36 gallons?

  8. Hi Sinto, wonderful video! Do we need to anneal the sheet before glueing? My small tank cracked repeatedly. And I googled it and people said annealing is needed to relieve residual stress. I laser cut the sheet. Have you tried annealing?

  9. Hey, your video was first video my girl google played for me when I asked to learn how to take. Classes to make plexiglass tanks. Thanks man.

  10. Nice. Maybe you can sub title it as well? Just wondering how much it would cost to build a 65 gallon aquarium with this material.
