I’M IN BAJA, MEXICO TO SOLVE
A PREHISTORIC MURDER MYSTERY — WHAT DROVE THE MEGALODON SHARK, THE BIGGEST, MOST POWERFUL
PREDATOR OF ALL TIME, TO EXTINCTION? PALEONTOLOGIST
DR. ROBERT BOESSENECKER BELIEVES THE ANSWER MAY LIE
IN THE MEG’S FOSSILIZED TEETH, AND WE JUST FOUND ONE. OH, MY GOD!
Boessenecker: WHOA. LOOK AT THAT!
BEAUTIFUL. ARE YOU KIDDING ME? LOOK AT THE SIZE
OF THIS THING! THAT IS A MASSIVE TOOTH. THAT’S UNBELIEVABLE! SO, THIS IS A FULL
ADULT MEG TOOTH? YEAH, THIS IS FROM
A SHARK THAT WAS ABOUT 50 TO 60 FEET
IN LENGTH. THAT IS HUGE. AND IT’S JUST ONE
OF THE ESTIMATED 276 SUPER-SIZED CHOMPERS THAT LINED THIS SUPER-SHARK’S
11-FOOT MOUTH. SO, WHAT CAN WE LEARN
FROM A TOOTH LIKE THIS? SO, THIS TOOTH IS REALLY BIG,
IT’S TRIANGULAR, IT’S THICK,
IT’S GOT SERRATED CUTTING EDGES. THIS IS AN ANIMAL
THAT HAD TEETH ADAPTED FOR FEEDING
ON QUITE LARGE PREY. AND IN FACT, I BROUGHT
SOMETHING ALONG TO SHOW YOU. WHAT IS THIS? THIS IS
A FOSSIL WHALE RIB WITH MEGALODON
BITE MARKS ON IT. AND ON THIS SIDE, THE MEGALODON BIT
ALL THE WAY THROUGH THE RIB. THAT’S INSANE. FOSSIL EVIDENCE INDICATES THAT THE MEG’S PRIMARY DIET
WAS WHALES. BUT AROUND 3 TO 4 MILLION
YEARS AGO, THE NUMBER AND SIZE OF WHALES
BEGAN TO DECLINE. BECAUSE OF THIS, THE MEG
HAD TO TURN TO SMALLER WHALES AND PERHAPS ANOTHER
MORE PLENTIFUL FOOD SOURCE. THE PROBLEM WAS
THEY WEREN’T THE ONLY ONES WHO HAD A TASTE FOR SEAL. OKAY, SO, IF IT DIDN’T DIE OUT
FROM SOME MASS EXTINCTION EVENT, WHAT KILLED THE MEG? COULD HAVE BEEN OUT-COMPETED
BY A NUMBER OF DIFFERENT SHARKS. AND ONE OF THEM IS STILL ALIVE
RIGHT HERE IN BAJA TODAY. IT’S STILL ALIVE?
YES. SO, SHARK SPECIES
THAT ARE ALIVE TODAY ONCE WENT HEAD-TO-HEAD

  1. Here is my theory on #Megalodon: Megalodon (#Carcharodonmegalodon) and the Great White (#Carcharodoncarcharias) are one and the same. The only difference being that the prey of Megalodon stays in waters that is cannot get to for six months out of the year, so it shrunk to the size of the modern Great White. But the Great White still has the DNA of Megalodon, and every now and then you get that ONE freak individual that gets all the conditions correct, and gets to grow to Megalodon size. And I think that #SubmarineShark off the coast of South Africa and the #SuperPredator of Bremer Canyon off the coast of Australia may be 2 of those freak individuals.

    What do you think?

  2. Probably found this thing years and years ago. Decided it was worth burying and making an episode around it.

  3. I wish Josh Gates would either shave, or grow a beard. That perfectly trimmed, 5 o'clock shadow is ridiculous.

  4. I see that Discovery's sharkweek has invited the hip hip crowd; Shaq, Anthony Anderson, Damon Wayans Jr. into their program… as if things like this interest them… GTFO WITH THAT SHIT. Thank goodness for National Geographic's Sharkfest… so far.

  5. See people think they know it all if it's no meegaldon sharks on Earth now how can they predict another shark took over them no one knows that except people that believe their own theory!!! Sorry people!!! My opinion!!!! Just like Bigfoot,if you haven't captured one to know about it then why do people theory it!!! When they never seen any of captured one!!! But as we all no someone has to no it all

  6. There's a spot called Sharktooth Hill right here in Bakersfield, California where anyone can dig and find museum-class meg teeth!

  7. I don’t think the megalodon is extinct … just may only be a few left and they stay in deeper waters

  8. The Greatest Predators of alltime are Humans. Way better than Megalodons 😅😅😅 if Megalodobs are still alive they might be harvested by Scandinavians and Japanese humans 😅

  9. 🦈❤️🦈❤️Hey JAWS Fans ; come check out my latest videos in celebration of 45 Years of the classic movie “ JAWS “. Please Like and Subscribe!!!🦈❤️🦈❤️🦈❤️Thank You from the bottom of my heart .

  10. Oh look a meg tooth and it was just in the SURFACE… this proves one thing… I got click baited, also if there was a meg tooth right there… that means the shark died less than 50 years ago… you clearly don't know how decomposition works and with the movement of the continents and rain, you might be able to find that… if lucky? 50 meters below the surface… Shark Wankers

  11. So that desert used to be an ocean. I wonder who's to blame for the global warming that dried up that ocean? Let's ask Al Gore, he'll know
