Tropical Island Coast Seafood Forage Catch and Cook Sea Urchin Octopus Oyster EP.414

Andy’s fishing hey everyone its Andy
here from Andy’s fishing I’m out on the reef flat today to do a bit of coastal
foraging I’m gonna try and forage my dinner I don’t know what I’m gonna get
I’ve got a spear, a hook and an oyster knife. so we’ll just see what we
can find here. Check this little guy out here he’s run out of water save you look
how pretty is that’s a ty of Gobi and you might we’ll put him into a little
puddle here there you go off you go buddy as many of you know that have been
watching my videos I’ve been trying to catch octopus and I’ve already seen sign
of octopus but yeah I don’t know if I’ll get them I’ve been trying for a while
okay we found an octopus but I’m not gonna eat this guy check this thing out
I’ve seen three of these before they’re really weird I’ve got these super long
arms and they’re like a really soft body here he is look look he’s getting
turning it away from us let’s see if we can lift him up I don’t like hurt him or
anything he doesn’t want to these guys are actually supposedly they can bite
you and they’re bit poisonous to be honest
look it’s just such a weird little critter
these legs are like tiny skinny little things he’s found a halt he’s going
going into his little hole, there he goes. know but yeah really weak little little
octopus that so here’s a stingray since I’ve just cooked the Stingray recently
I’m not gonna hunt him but yeah you can see how how close you can get to them
hey little guy there you guys there you go there’s another stingray as
you can see in the shallows here there’s no shortage of stingrays and I can I can
probably almost touch it with my hand that’s a mangrove ray I ate one of those
a few episodes ago yeah I like oh this looks good
I hope it’s full oh look at that we’ve scored the size of that that’s almost a
meal in itself oh oh I think he’s empty yep he’s empty look at that ah my god I
thought I was told I got lucky then no what keep looking what is this this looks really
interesting I don’t know it must be picking it out button let’s just grab it
with a pulse and now I think it could even be a carry show let’s have a look
at it no it’s a nudibranch all right this is a like a type of sea slug called
nudibranch I’m pretty sure how long I’ll check to make sure but what I want a
cool little critter hey I’m not gonna eat him I think they’re probably
actually very toxic so we’ll put you back over here little guy there he goes
yep he’s happy okay here’s another stingray there’s just so many here they’re actually pretty harmless animals
but as I found out in my episode I think 4 1 3 stingray hot and sour they’re very
tasty this clear water is so cool I just saw a little stingray burying himself
get ready he’s gonna take off I’ll just touch it no he’s pretending like he’s
he’s a tough little guy he’s not taking off yet yeah there he goes no he’s a burrier all right leave him alone normally they just screw it off and he
just just wanted to bury oh here we go
I was hoping I’d find one of these this is a sea urchin
I wonder if we can get him out you can see all those black spines there let’s
try and get him out I can’t never eaten one of these I’ve
never even really pulled one out of anyway there he is he’s a little fella
that wasn’t hard at all was it oh look at that guy
no he’s gonna try to walk away it’s getting closer look at him so the only
part you eat of these are the gonads or reproductive organs let’s see we can
grab him shouldn’t get spiked by these guys because yeah because they can’t be
quite painful do you think you’d eat that it’s an odd thing I’ve never eaten
one but so yeah I’m definitely gonna give it a go ah on the finger wonder if
you guys can see that he’s got iridescent blue right near his mouth see
I can see you in there see we can see that it’s just spectacular all right
we’ve got something a little tasty treat hopefully I said I’ve never tried one of
these before give it a shot just knocking all these
spines off and he’s actually already cracked open a little bit there
let’s see how we’re gonna do this just using the back of my knife to get all
the spines off him bottom I was looking at before that’s the bit you want to eat
there we go we can you can see it and are we getting there I’ll just pull it
open I think oh my a bit of a mess of this there we
go now this is supposed to taste like kiss
of the ocean or something Sea Urchin gonads or Roe, look at that it’s a little bit
hard to feel myself eating this but that’s the bit there that sea urchin
gonads hmm kind of a little bit creamy you can tell us I’m like a like an ocean
fish egg egg style thing watch the rest of this out oh yeah very very
interesting hmm like I said this is my first time trying this and it’s so yeah
very very interesting mm-hmm it definitely tastes like the
ocean mm-hmm I’m not gonna eat many of these I think one what a month might be
enough bottom half of him there’s nothing nothing worth eating in there
leave that for the all the fish and the crabs they’ll come and clean up after me
it definitely was a time not that long ago where I would have thought there’s
no way I’m gonna eat this but because I’m you know exploring trying trying
different things it’s worth trying new things hmm they’re not what’s some enough we’re
gonna get those mullet there’s a little fish I can seem on the surface yeah very
interesting just to try these things and I’m not
gonna eat these all the time this is just a once-off try it yeah so whenever
you have muck around with animals that just just got spiked by that guy’s not a
doesn’t actually hurt that much some odd Brown yeah
residue there so probably shouldn’t shouldn’t play with him too much but
just try one there’s a clean water is so cool I just saw a little stingray
burying himself get ready he’s gonna take off I just touch II know he’s
pretending like he’s he’s a tough little guy he’s not taking off yet
yeah there he goes nice he’s a burrier leaving the line normally they just
scoot off and he just you just wanted to bury check this out I think the
minimally yeah bit hard to say some people but yes have a look at him in the
world I’m very sure that’s an anemone don’t want to touch that guy he’s they
haven’t have like stingers in their little feelers fingers their arms
just let him be that’s cool oh yeah they’d borrow down in the sand most of
their body is in the sand and it’s just little arms that they feed with I’ve
just shown you that sea anemone that was in the water this is one that’s actually on
the land see that look there he goes this is a sea anemone on the land check
these guys out they are called soldier crabs because
they march in an army let’s grab a couple look at that some beaches you get
thousands and thousands of them I don’t know if they’re any good but as bait
I’ve never really used them on yeah I’ve seen them quite a lot right there funny
you know and burry yourself yeah they dig spirally like like a yeah
it’s pretty cool off you go buddy yeah oh he’s a he’s an odd little critter get
this guy I don’t want to touch him he’s covered in spines with some sticking me
in the water he said we can wash him a little bit I don’t actually I don’t know
what this is it’s so very very odd it’s like oh yeah
it’s like nothing I’ve ever seen before it’s got lots of little hairy spines and
yeah you can you can walk along quite well see this is a little trial when he
made there it guys what a bizarre critter hey and it’s strange if anyone
knows what that is please let me know because that’s that’s always its bottom
there hey there’s a little like it’s got eyes there you guys for that cruising
along it was a very very strange so while I’m walking along here in the
shallows I’m making very sure that I don’t stand a lot corals either
sand or dead cult until I’m standing on a lot like walking around in an aquarium
like it’s less than knee deep water and the water is fairly clear I can see you
all around here so very lovely here’s another piece of live coral, there’s not a
lot of them there’s a little bit under the under the weed there have a look at
this baby little ray he’s got a really long term stripes on it look there he
goes and here we’ve got a nice this is called the brain coral it looks like
brain he’s healthy that’s a good looking good looking Coral
oh look another stingray right here hello mister stingray okay it’s
definitely no shortage of them so you gotta watch out when you’re walking
around here that you don’t step on one of those guys cuz they’re not always
paying attention look yeah there’s another lurking right there I’ve already
eaten one so I’m not gonna kill another one but I’ll get the camera out and you
can have a have a nice look at this one I’m pretty sure they’re a spiny sea
urchin there’s a whole bunch of them and there’s like 200 species of sea urchins
but you can see the little white dots on top of him and then this little blue
dots right near his bottom that’s there that’s pretty cool and while I’m
looking at this one I just notice if I go over here there’s another four I
think five it’s been hard to see yeah yeah I get the underwater camera there’s
one there three there that’s pretty cool
I’m not gonna eat any more of these guys I um I tried one but yeah it’s good to
see this few around I don’t feel guilty for eating one and not to be honest
that’s quite nice there’s something cool I think this is the sea cucumber once
picking out with a spoon yeah it’s a sea cucumber can’t serve any usually sing my
like this it’s very hard like it’s almost like a coral wow that’s pretty
cool anyway let’s go go well he’s upside down always put them
back the right way out like that okay so your guy always discovering new things
only doesn’t matter how many times I come out here I’m always finding stuff
I’ve never seen before very cool as you can tell from the
length of my shadow the sun’s going down pretty fast and it’s pretty low already
so we’ll give up on on this I was hoping to Spear a mullet well I’m off to try
that another time but I let’s see if we can find some some forage food along the
think I’m along the shore Here I am I really want to do like a um a seafood
chowder I’ve got a few ingredients with me as you can see there’s no shortage of
oysters that’s one that’s one that’s one that’s one that’s one that’s one that’s
one that’s one that’s one that’s one well I’ll definitely get a few oysters
here I would like to try a few other things as well we’ll see if we can find
some limpets or periwinkles or something something different okay this is what I
was looking for there we go that’s a periwinkle a thing have yam
basically a saltwater smile there’s another one these guys I’ve got a really
hard shell so we’ll get a few more of these well um you’ll see see if we can
get a few different there’s a couple down here there we go look at that you
just got a good look around you up two more almost lost him there we go
so this is actually a nice spot we’ve got a few nice whiskers here oh there’s
another shell put that in my pocket so what I’ve got is I’ve got a really short
butter knife that I’ve cut the end off and here just a little sturdy knife so
just get a rock go into the you can tell that’s the hinge because that’s the the
lip they’re going there break the hinge give it a little twist and then slide
this knife you know underneath and cut the muscle off the boat off the off the
shell there we go that could not have been done any better
look at that mmm fresh oysters off the rocks and her
first oyster we’re gonna have to eat it raw just to stay in the theme of the day
raw actions raw oysters off the rocks so we just slide it straight in mmm quite
salty when they’ve been out of the water for a while they they tend to get
saltier and saltier mmm but yeah fresh taste of the ocean mmm Suns just gone
down you can probably see a little bit of Sun behind me still want to grab
alright maybe a dozen of these dozen oysters and then will you cook up the
chowder before it gets dark we’ve got another half an hour of daylight break
the hinge give a little twist and get that knife in that there we go yep I just don’t believe it because it’s
not like they’re running away anyway so that’s like their stomach area this is
their gills where they breathe and that there is the muscle the foot where they
young well sorry not the muscle that’s that’s where they close and this is the
hinge yeah where they open and close from okay here’s a nice little spot to
cook our dinner now I’ve got some nice camping gear I
don’t think you’ve seen it before but I’ll show you you know bag look at that
some fancy bread eat that with the seafood chowder some people call this a
um a seafood boil well just get all our ingredients out you guys have seen the
Snow Peak cutting board many times but here’s something new nice little Snow
Peak camping cook set this is like really light there’s – there’s a pot
actually two pots and two little pans in here so I’ve been carrying that around
all day which yeah it doesn’t doesn’t worry me because it’s so light and then
we’ve got our little Snow Peak camping table like it’s it’s really small but
I’m here great to to have when you you’re hiking and then that clicks oh
yeah there we go and this here is the Jetboil gas unit so
I didn’t bring the whole Jetboil but what I did bring is I’ve managed to put
the gas bottle inside so look at that not only was that pots it was actually
the gas bottle as well butane and that will be my cooker very compact very
light this is a little stand put that down there and having three
legs it will you can sit it up yeah perfect nice and level and then we use
the bigger plot and that lid actually doubles as a frying pan but we’re just
gonna use it there’s a lid look at that very nice little setup wish I had this
when I was hiking around the world like that there that’s probably 40 50 grams
at the most anyway we’ll use that another day so before we even start chop
chopping up ingredients we want to get some water on the boil and starting this
couldn’t be simpler there’s a button on the right there and you just turn the
gas on and it’s on that’s it really cool put the lid on there that’ll cook
quicker put that little table over here look at that nice is that so hopefully
I’m getting a a bigger version of this because it’s this one’s great but a
bigger one will let me chop chop quicker I think yeah
obviously like cooking but you’re having the right gear this is really nice so we
use half an onion and we’ll just do a couple of cuts like that we’ll leave it
join at the bottom like that so all we want is the flavor
there we go that’s almost boiling getting our carrots chopped ends off cut
them down the middle so the ingredients I’ve just put in the carrot the onion
and the garlic which I’m about to put in there they’re basically nice flavors
pretty much any any sort of stew or we’re actually making a chowder seafood
chowder we’ve only got I think three different
species I would have really liked to spear a mullet but that didn’t
happen I will just cut this into discs the
flavors will come out and that’s almost on the boil so just
pull these out of my pocket I’ve got a few more in there but just got a watch
if you put them down there they don’t just start walking away because
obviously there it just snails in their little homes all right now we’ll get the
corn that’s some yeah that’s boiling very gently get all the husk off the
corn this is where a nice little sharp knife comes in really handy just gonna
take off all those little kernels here we go if you ask me if it hasn’t got
corn it it’s not a seafood chowder mmm I can smell the yeah the carrot the onion
so these guys won’t take too long to cook but we want them in there at least
an hour 10 minutes or so drop them in now we’ll get our oysters just cut them
off the shelf there we go and yeah just drop all those in makes
you won’t take too long to cook at all but we’re running out of light I won’t
bore you with all the oysters going in we go just um just cook that nicely
while we’re waiting for the seafood chowder to finish cooking actually and
put some salt in but let’s just have a nice bit of bread mmm freshly baked now
just watch the Sun go down mmm I’ll pick one with them with olives
in it normally I’d have this with butter but what I’m going to do is when the the
chale is cooked I’m going to dip the bread in that in the sauce mmm in the
tower ahh mmm mmm it’s not quite what I was expecting I think I may have
forgotten some ingredients mmm so yeah I’m gonna have to try seafood chowder
again sometime mmm corn night let’s try an oyster it’s just not looking right it’s more
like looking like a soup now let’s have a look see if yeah he’s actually open
never tried a periwinkle or a yeah cease now I am eating snails funny
funny-looking critters but actually tastes really nice like a meteor like a
really meaty oyster mm-hmm definitely get any more of those so the biggest
bonus for me today was eating that sea urchin it was yeah very interesting
taste very nice taste I wouldn’t eat too many of them but got to try these things
and the periwinkle the snail that was cool too those of you watching that

nice nice afternoon out the winds come right off and I’m gonna finish eating
eating the good bits out of there I’m not gonna eat the onion obviously well
some people need young but I’m just gonna eat the periwinkles the oysters
the corn I don’t like cook care there’s something
