When You Kill Off Beneficial Bacteria Do They Grow Back?

Eric Bakker, naturopath, thanks for coming
back. When you kill good bacteria in your gut, are
they gone forever? Will they come back? Is it a matter of just popping a probiotic
and they’ll come back again? You may have heard me talk in other videos,
particularly regarding antibiotic usage and how we wipe out or destroy our microbiome. I can assure you, you don’t take out all the
bacteria. It just doesn’t happen. The bacteria stay there, but they go right
down. They go down to a very small population, but
they hang in there. The colony stays. And I’ve never really seen a person have a
complete eradication of all their beneficials, they stay. But the trick is to get them back again, to
encourage them. All right? I’ve learned something very interesting from
keeping marine fish. I love to keep coral fish and corals and tropical
stuff in my tank. What I’ve learned is all about keeping the
parameters stable and right. If I’ve got a colony of coral that’s looking
sickly or poorly, it’s probably my fault, I stuffed up, because I’ve either got something
wrong with the water or I put too much food in there. I love the problem solving part of things. And usually I never ever lose a colony entirely. I always keep it. I may buy a coral, it’s big and it may sometimes
get knocked back, because parameters aren’t tight in the tank. But when I get the parameters correct, meaning
the alkalinity, the temperature, the salinity, the calcium, magnesium, and the trace elements,
when I get all that balanced, they thrive. The corals just look fantastic. Now, your gut’s the same. When your diet is good, when you eat the right
foods, when you chew properly, when you eat resistant starch, when the parameters in your
lifestyle and diet are good, your gut will thrive. When the parameters are out of balance and
there’s stress in terms of both lifestyle and diet, it won’t thrive. But then to add insult to injury, when you
actually dump chemicals in your body that destroy life, like antibiotics, that’s when
you really pay the price. But you can recover. I have seen some patients though that never
recover, but these are a minority. I must tell you, I’ve seen an awful lot of
people and out of all the people I’ve seen, I can only clearly think of about a handful
of people that have never recovered from even one round of antibiotics, 20, 30 years later,
they’re still sick in bed. It nearly killed them. That’s a minority. Okay? The majority will recover, but the recovery
can range from reasonable recovery up to full recovery. And the recovery phase all depends on you
out there, on what you are doing with your life, on how you’re eating and what you’re
eating, and how you’re living. Okay, so remember I’ve done videos explaining,
you don’t have to eat clean all the time, or eat keto, or have specific type dietary
regimes to get the microbiome back in balance. You have to really start to understand that
what suits one person may not suit you at all. And that’s the problem in our industry. Things have to be tailored to suit the individual. If you’re intelligent and look at some more
of my videos and try and get the message that I’m trying to really push through these videos,
you’ll understand it’s a holistic approach that brings about a balanced microbiome. Supplements are important in some stage in
recovery, but they’re not the be all, end all. And it’s the same with food. It’s all about the balance. Click on the link below in the description
